Garmin GPS-12XL Position Averaging > How it works The Garmin G-12xl has a position averaging feature. It is not a feature that averages your plot or track as you move along. It is designed to permit the user to capture a bit more accuracy when you are at a fixed waypoint and want to store the location with maximum accuracy. In this case, maximum accuracy seems to be in the order of perhaps 50 feet or so depending on how long you are willing to stand still. Some experimenters have suggested that to get good readings, you need to average for upwards of 15 to 20 minutes. I personally don't have that much patience! The feature works as follows. To enter a waypoint, you press the mark button on the GPS. The waypoint window appears. You then can enter a waypoint name if you wish. Then tab on down the list and you will come to "average?". Select yes and stand still. FOM (figure of merit) on the display will give you some idea of how accurate your fix is. FOM is apparently the one sigma error ESTIMATE. It is NOT a warranty! When you are satisfied that the FOM is as low as it is going to go or when you are tired of waiting, select save and your "averaged" waypoint will be saved. Note: This feature works essentially the same on most Garmin models including the G-II+ and the G-III, but the button pushes may be different. Joe Mehaffey
